We answer your questions about SPF and Rosalique
With summer in full swing, it is now more important than ever to keep your skin protected from the sun. You should use skincare products with an SPF all year round, even when the sun is not out, but it is essential to use them when the sun is shining. Especially if you have rosacea, as the sun is one of the main triggers that can cause flare-ups.
Rosacea flare-ups triggered by sunlight occur because the fragile capillaries of rosacea sufferers can be easily damaged by UVB rays, resulting in thread veins and reddened skin. Did you know just a few minutes of sunlight on rosacea-prone skin can lead to uncontrollable flushing and redness?
A study by the National Rosacea Society surveyed 431 people and found 80% said spending time in the sun caused their rosacea to flare up. The same number agreed that spending time in the heat had the same effect. This is not to say you cannot spend time outdoors, but if you are suffering you should try to avoid being in the sun at peak times and apply SPF regularly.
Another survey by the National Rosacea Society found that applying sunscreen or SPF helped to reduce the number of flare-ups the rosacea sufferers were experiencing. In this case, sunscreens with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as its active ingredient are the best types of sunscreen to reach for. We use titanium dioxide as well as five other active ingredients in Rosalique, which you can find out more about here.
In this blog, we wanted to share and answer some FAQs we often get about Rosalique and its SPF.
1) What SPF is used in Rosalique?
We use an SPF 50 in Rosalique, as people suffering with rosacea should be using an SPF of 30 or higher for their sensitive skin to be adequately protected.
2) Does Rosalique protect against UVA/UVB rays?
Yes, Rosalique protects against both UBA and UVB rays. The SPF in Rosalique has a 5* Boots rating, making it perfect for rosacea sufferers.
3) Can I still get a tan when using an SPF 50?
Yes, you can still get a tan whilst using SPF 50. SPFs upward of 15 can even help you build a golden glow without the nasty side effects of unprotected tanning.
4) Can I apply Rosalique only on the affected areas of my face, or does that mean my tan will come out uneven?
Using Rosalique on just the affected areas shouldn’t visibly affect your tan, but we would recommend applying Rosalique all over your face so that you are fully protected from the sun.
5) How long does the SPF last? Should I reapply during the day?
On an overcast, cloudy days applying Rosalique in the morning only would probably keep you protected for most of the day. However, if the sun is shining bright, if you are spending extended periods outside, if you are sunbathing or if you’re having a rosacea flare-up, you might want to reapply up to every 2 hours.
6) I don't get sunburn easily, do I still need an SPF?
Yes, you should use an SPF on a daily basis to help protect the skin against the sun’s broad spectrum of harmful UV rays. Minimising the penetration of UV rays into the skin is important as they can trigger a variety of skin disorders as well as premature ageing.
